A Taste of Paradise has some fabulous supporters. The Berry Garden Club has over the years assisted us in purchasing 12 raised garden beds. These had been positioned so that we could enclose them in a tunnel house which another generous supporter had previously donated to us. As part of the plan, Tim installed irrigation to each of the beds, knowing they were going to be inside.
Last year we had some volunteers join us with the skills needed to erect the tunnel house. Thanks mainly to Greg and Ron, the foundations were laid out and the frame constructed. The covering was added and doors and ramps constructed at both ends.
Our gardening team have been using the raised beds for some time now but, enclosed by the tunnel house, they have noticed an increase in growth in these beds. The zucchini, chilli and tomatoes have produced extremely well under the tunnel house conditions and we are hoping that we can grow tomatoes all year round.
Presently, we have some young people who are interested in gardening, and our mentors have also been directing them to plant seedlings in these beds, caring for them and enjoying the harvesting. This is developing lifelong skills in horticulture and healthy eating.
With the range of our activities now able to include cooking in the outdoor kitchen, the plants grown year-round in the tunnel house will be of fantastic use. What another important skill to teach the young people in our programs.
Thanks to all our supporters, volunteers, mentors and mentees for a job well done.
