The farm is a wonderful place where disadvantaged and at-risk young people learn and flourish. Girls are particularly suited to this outdoor environment, and we are grateful that we have two very encouraging female mentors, Beth and Paige, who take the girls under their wings and guide them through our programs. Although we don’t have as many female as male applicants seeking to come to the farm, those that do come have an inspiring experience.

The girls seem to have a natural affinity with the animals and take great pleasure in caring for them. Grooming the horses is a particular favourite although the baby goats are also very appealing, and the girls are very adept at collecting and packing the eggs and catching the chickens for tagging.

The girls also enjoy planting seeds and watching them flourish in the hot house before being transferred into pots and eventually planted in the garden. Our mentors encourage them to try the fresh produce straight from the organic vegetable garden and orchard and they discuss healthy foods with them.

Art therapy is also available on the farm. A nice corner has been set up in the training room and after feeding the animals, it is a great place to escape to if the weather is unpleasant. Here they can sketch the animals, draw with feathers, print with vegetables and a myriad of other farming-related art activities.

We presently have mentoring spots available for young females who will no doubt find the farm a supportive and inspiring place. Applications can be lodged through our admin email or phone the office for more information.
